The Experimentation of Light

Like all of my explorations, the ones I have done with light radiate an aura of things unfinished, things yet to be continued. Virtually all of my explorations are just that: explorations. It takes only as much shape as needed to become visible, acquire potential for development and adaptation, or be integrated into various fields such as architecture, performance, film ...

Since my rudimentary experiments of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and aided by the enhancement of lighting technologies, I have witnessed spectacular, overblown and sometimes merely commercial developments. They were enabled purely by an increase in electrical power and a simple repertoire of effects realized at great expense by electronic engineers. These, however, are far removed from my own first experiments with artificial light, in which I used a 60 W kitchen light bulb. I have always believed in the need for a correlation between means and result: the imagination must prevail over technology.

My experiments with light and movement are closely linked to the idea of a departure from fixed, stable, definitive works. Instead, they position the viewer in front of—or in the midst of—multifarious developments. Elements and forms provide uniform support, accentuating without distraction the evident instability of the work and leaving the viewer to perceive just enough of the changes to develop a full sense of the experience.

At that time, I thought my work was limited to confronting certain elements and that, once the link was established, the visual outcome would be the consequence. I believed this was obvious to the viewer, who did not need to look for any emotional, aesthetic or other motivations that might have driven me to choose one image over another.

I carried out my first experiments with light in 1959: we placed lights in small boxes, which reproduced, multiplied and combined with Plexiglas panels, slates, prisms, squares and circles, using a scale of fourteen colors. Like my other experiments, this particular one was not about creating luminous paintings; far more, light, like the Plexiglas and geometric forms, was merely a way to manifest my thoughts, to capture their potential variations and visualize them as a single visual field.

The experiments in my first labyrinth, in 1963, were an attempt to surprise the viewer, to place them at the center of a phenomenon, and completely surround them with a visual situation. Three of my works combined light with reflective elements to give shape to three cells through which the viewer would pass. Unlike a traditional painting on a wall or a sculpture placed on the floor for the observer to walk around, the phenomenon of these pieces could not be comprehended at a single glance. Far more, these experiments plunged the observer into a visual situation that demanded their attention from all sides at once. The image perceived on passing through was the product of the time, successive movements and images experienced within the space.

Traditional works of art require an understanding of the fixed system of signs and keys in order to be appreciated. My work, on the other hand, allows the observer to experience multiple possibilities of change captured in images generated from a simple combination of various more or less complex elements rather than from the artist’s skill or inspiration. This constitutes an effective—though admittedly limited—way to begin or indeed continue deconstructing traditional notions of art and its making, display and appreciation.
