Juan Manuel Echavarría erzielt Präsenz (der prekären Situation Kolumbiens) durch Absenz (expliziten Bildmaterials). Oft bedient er sich auch der Metapher, um seinen kolumbianischen Sujets Allgemeingültigkeit zu verleihen. Präzise und prägnant setzt er seine Stilmittel ein, die den Groschen beim Betrachter erst beim zweiten Hinsehen fallen lassen.

Das Video Bocas de ceniza (Aschenmünder) zeigt, dass die Auswirkung von Gewalt eindrücklicher darstellbar ist als die Gewalt selbst: Kolumbianer, vor deren Augen sich grausame Massaker abgespielt haben, singen in einfachen Liedern vom Erlebten. Dieser kathartisch-selbsttherapeutische Akt erfolgt in einer derart dichten Konzentration und in solch verblüffender Aufrichtigkeit, dass die Psyche der Vortragenden bis auf die Wurzeln freigelegt wird. Ihre Augen und Stimmen lassen uns in ihrer fast unerträglichen Präsenz ganz unmittelbar am Geschehenen teilnehmen, ohne dass wir jemals Details erfahren.

Die soziale Beziehung zweier Papageien im Video Guerra y pa’ (Krieg und Frieden) wird zum gültigen Sinnbild menschlichen Zusammenlebens. Ein Hymnus auf sein Heimatland verwandelt sich, ohne dass wir uns versehen, in ein Häufchen Kokain (Bandeja de Bolívar / Bolívars Präsentierteller). In der Serie Corte de florero entpuppen sich exotisch anmutende Pflanzen, wie aus botanischen Enzyklopädien des 19. Jahrhunderts entnommen, als menschliche Knochen...
