Luis Camnitzer

Für Luis Camnitzer ist Kunst ein Instrument zur Wissenserweiterung. Seit den 1960er-Jahren erforscht er die gesellschaftliche Funktion von Kunst, das Verhältnis zwischen Künstler und Betrachter sowie das vielschichtige Beziehungsgeflecht von Sprache und Macht.

Grundlegend für seine Arbeitsweise ist, dass er die Bedeutung eines Werks auf Augenhöhe mit dem Publikum bestimmt. Dabei kommt dem Werk die Rolle eines Kommunikationsmotors zu, der Denkräume öffnet. Ein wichtiges Arbeitsmittel ist das geschriebene Wort, das in Camnitzers künstlerischem Schaffen und auch in seinen theoretischen Schriften scharfsinnig und hintergründig zum Ausdruck gelangt.

1937 in Lübeck geboren wuchs Camnitzer in Uruguay auf und zog 1964 nach New York, wo er heute als einflussreicher Künstler, Pädagoge, Kritiker und Kunsttheoretiker lebt. Camnitzer verlieh der Konzeptkunst, die sich im Umfeld der sozialen und politischen Umwälzungen der 1960er- und 1970er-Jahre an unterschiedlichsten Orten entwickelte, neue Impulse, indem er seine kulturübergreifenden Erfahrungen produktiv einfliessen liess. Eine weitere Triebkraft für die Entwicklung seines vielgestaltigen Œuvres war die Neubestimmung der Druckgrafik, deren Potenzial als demokratisches Informationsinstrument er im «New York Graphik Workshop» (zusammen mit Liliana Porter und José Guillermo Castillo) reaktivierte. Stets mit dem Blick eines Unangepassten ist Camnitzer vor allem auch ein analytischer Beobachter und kritischer Begleiter unserer Zeit, der seinen Handlungsrahmen keinesfalls auf den Kunstkontext beschränkt sieht.

Für Camnitzer ist Kunst weniger eine Disziplin als eine Methode, die es ermöglicht, Widerstand gegen angelernte Erkenntnisse zu leisten. Sie ebnet damit unkonventionellen Fragestellungen den Weg, sodass uns letztlich nicht nur die Kunst, sondern auch das Leben interessiert.
