Letztlich ist das Rohmaterial meiner Arbeit die lateinamerikanische Lebenswirklichkeit. In meinen Arbeiten, in denen ich in synkretistischer Weise Elemente der präkolumbianischen Vergangenheit mit Bildern aus den heutigen Medien verbinde, geht es darum, eine Art «gesellschaftliches Selbstporträt» von einer fragilen Kultur zu erschaffen, die von den modernen Medien – die kulturelle Macht der Ersten Welt – durchdrungen ist. Die Situation der Enteignung und der kulturellen Entwurzelung ist eine Form unterschwelliger Gewalt, die weitere Gewalt nach sich zieht.

Nadín Ospina

Nadín Ospina konterkariert spielerisch, ironisch und witzig die gängige Erwartungshaltung an lateinamerikanische Kunst. Er präsentiert präkolumbische Skulpturen aus Stein, Keramik oder Metall, die er auf seine Weise verändert hat: Den mythischen Figuren der präkolumbischen Zeit setzt er Köpfe aus Walt Disney’s sagenhafter Tierwelt auf. So zieren nun Mickey, Minnie, Goofy oder Pluto „alte“ Keramiken oder Steinskulpturen, eine Statue aus dem kolumbianischen San Agustín wird vom Kopf eines Bart Simpson bekrönt. All diese Objekte sind authentische Fälschungen, nach den ursprünglichen Vorbildern von lokalen Spezialisten hergestellt.

Über das reine Spiel mit der amüsierten Überraschung des Betrachters hinaus werfen diese Objekte die Frage nach der Verschmelzung der unterschiedlichen Kulturen auf. Ospina zeichnet nicht nur die Überfremdung der lateinamerikanischen Kulturen durch die US-amerikanische nach, sondern verweist generell auf die Hybridisierung seiner eigenen wie auch anderer Kulturen im Verlauf der letzten Jahrhunderte.

Die in Lateinamerika so oft gestellte Frage nach der eigenen Identität wird von ihm auf freundlich heitere Art, mit leicht bitterem Anklang, beantwortet: Das eigentliche Original lebt nur als Studien- oder Prestigeobjekt in preziösen Sammlungen fort – im heutigen Alltag ist nichts mehr authentisch, sondern alles ist durchwirkt von unzähligen Einflüssen, welche die hehre Idee vom Original nachhaltig kontaminiert haben. Nur in der Durchmischung findet sich noch die eigentliche Identität.
